Lakeside Camp

Lakeside Camp is a new summer residence by bruce norelius studio, situated on a lakeshore site in Maine. The brief called for a retreat that would evoke the feeling of a traditional 1920s cottage while supporting contemporary summer living. The project responds to its context through material choices and construction practices that reflect the area's building heritage. Design decisions focused on sourcing materials locally and employing traditional construction methods. Interior framing uses exposed studs milled at a local sawmill working with 19th-century techniques, while the masonry features locally sourced stone assembled in the manner of historic cottages. The architectural language references the region’s vernacular without direct imitation, expressing both modern and traditional sensibilities. The camp is intended to support the seasonal rituals associated with summer life on the lake.
