Driftless Bluff Cabin

Driftless Bluff Cabin is an 800-square-foot residence completed in 2023 by Imprint Architecture and Design, LLC, located on a rural 25-acre parcel near Decorah, Iowa. The owners, both ecologists, sought to create a retreat that supported land restoration efforts on former row-cropped ground now being integrated into a rotational grazing system. The site, adjacent to existing family farmland, informed a patient approach to both ecological stewardship and building, as the project was designed in 2019 but delayed by the pandemic before construction began. The cabin’s orientation and large corner windows were carefully planned to maximize solar gain and allow extensive views across the rewilding landscape. A restrained modern and Scandinavian Nordic character is expressed in clean lines and a muted material palette. Attention is drawn to a custom walnut arched door, crafted from timber sourced on the family farm and paired with a metal-lined portico fabricated by the client’s brother, further tying the design to its agrarian context. The cabin’s proportions and window placement create an interior that remains directly connected to the evolving prairie and grazing lands outside.
