Stehly Residence

The Stehly Residence is a Mediterranean-inspired home located in Point Loma, California, designed for a young family of five. Sited near a small park and among historic neighbors, the project responds to the area's architectural context while avoiding direct historic replication. Respecting the clients’ admiration for Cliff May and traditional Spanish Mediterranean forms, the design establishes connections to local precedent without resorting to mimicry. Two mature pine trees on site were preserved, influencing the organization of the plan. A central courtyard functions as an outdoor living room, enclosed by French doors that encourage movement and sightlines between inside and out. The single-room-wide arrangement of the home's spaces ensures ample daylight and cross-ventilation from multiple directions. Outdoor elements including concrete seating, strategic landscaping, and a fireplace contribute to informal gathering opportunities. On the upper level, expansive roof decks extend living areas outward and orient the home toward views of the park and downtown skyline. The design interprets traditional elements through a contemporary lens, focusing on spatial openness and a strong relationship to the surrounding landscape.
