Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects — Kings Point, NY, 1989

Located in Kings Point, New York, the Pool House is a modern addition completed in 1989 by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. Commissioned by a client with an interest in swimming and water therapy, the project introduced an indoor pool and wellness spaces to a 1961 residence. The new volume is accessible internally via the master bathroom and includes a swimming pool, a soaking tub, a changing room, and a kitchenette. Indirect exterior access was chosen to maintain privacy and reinforce the contemplative atmosphere. A seventy-foot-long Sol LeWitt mural, Triple Pyramids, occupies a principal wall, shaping the room’s spatial character and demanding visual balance in the design. Sliding glass panels frame garden views and offer a connection between water and landscape. The raised soaking tub overflows into the pool below, generating sound that enhances the sense of stillness. Material selections—colored stucco, stainless steel, and Lake Placid Granite—address the existing artwork’s textures and hues, while green granite ties the pool’s presence to the surrounding earth and vegetation. The Pool House mediates between art, architecture, and site, responding equally to the painted, built, and natural context.
