Puzzle Prefab

Puzzle Prefab is a modular residence designed by Wittman Estes Architecture+Landscape for the site along Airport Way South in Seattle, Washington. Conceived as the pilot project for a technology startup, the brief called for a high-performance, carbon-negative dwelling that could respond flexibly to its urban context while delivering a replicable housing solution. The project set out to demonstrate how modular construction and thoughtful design can combine to address efficiency, sustainability, and urban site constraints in a contemporary way. In its planning, the house is composed of prefabricated modules arranged to create defined indoor and outdoor spaces, with half of the overall floor plan configured as open-air living areas. The layout prioritizes outdoor connection and adaptability for diverse site conditions. Exterior and interior details balance precision with a direct expression of materials, emphasizing craftsmanship within the constraints of modular production. The design incorporates high-performance building systems to minimize energy consumption and reduce the overall carbon footprint. General contractor Sparrow Woodworks collaborated closely with the design team throughout fabrication and assembly, supporting the integration of craft and technical innovation as central features of the finished home.
