Wittman Estes Architecture+Landscape — Airport Way South Seattle, WA

Yo-Ju Courtyard House stands on Airport Way South in Seattle, Washington, developed for a site located in a dense urban setting. The project brief called for a residence that could offer privacy and tranquility while responding to the active neighborhood context. The house was conceived around the principle of crafting a private retreat, relying on the concept of a central courtyard to mediate the relationship between internal space and the street outside. The design arranges living spaces around a landscaped courtyard, using gardens at both ends of the house as visual buffers. Glazing and operable panels allow interior spaces to open directly onto the courtyard, blurring the separation between indoors and outdoors. The use of minimal detailing and a restrained materials palette reinforces the contemporary and modern character of the house. Interiors, designed by Wittman Estes, employ a muted scheme, with the kitchen featuring custom elements by Henrybuilt. The result is a residence organized for privacy and calm, shaped by landscape as much as structure, and carefully adapted to its urban surroundings.
