Studio One Architeture — Silverthorne, CO

Living room of Mayfly project features a tall stone fireplace and expansive wood ceiling with exposed beams.

Mayfly is a residence designed by Studio One Architecture, located in Silverthorne, Colorado, within a hillside neighborhood at an elevation above 9,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. The site is densely wooded with Aspen, and the design draws direct material and color references from the surrounding forest. Grey stone evokes the bark of the trees, shou sugi ban siding reflects the characteristic black knots, while stained Douglas fir timbers and roofing pick up the yellow-orange tones of autumn foliage. The house is organized in two wings that diverge from a central double-height great room, which features expansive glass walls facing both north and south, framing views of the mountains and valley. A bridge connects the wings, and a climbing wall runs through the interior, doubling as the fireplace. The entry sequence includes a porte cochere leading into a motor court and terraced landscape. This approach balances openness to the broader landscape with privacy and inward focus, while the interplay of structural timber, stone, and charred wood expresses a contemporary interpretation of vernacular mountain materials.
