Turnbull Griffin Haesloop — Napa Valley

Napa Valley Hillside home features a flat roof and stone landscaping integrated into natural hillside vegetation.

Napa Valley Hillside, designed by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop, is located on a rocky slope on the eastern side of Napa Valley within an active landscape of vineyards and olive orchards. The project responds to both topography and climate by incorporating a terrace system inspired by local stone agricultural methods. Stone terrace walls establish a flat platform for the house, with the material continuing inside to form stone flooring that connects the natural slope to the interior environment. Above the stone base, a butterfly roof extends to provide shelter and reference the valley’s contours, while enabling panoramic southwest views. The house features an open-plan interior that directly links a protected rear garden patio with a front terrace above the pool. Diagonal views across the plan capture a visual axis from the sheltered outdoor space to the valley. Deep roof overhangs minimize summer sun exposure without obstructing the outlook, and the home’s placement uses existing live oaks for added shading. Sustainable systems include a remote solar array for power and geothermal wells for efficient heating and cooling.
