Turnbull Griffin Haesloop — Steamboat Springs

Colorado Ranch is a residential project by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop, located on a working ranch near Steamboat Springs. The house sits on a plateau at an elevation of eight thousand feet, bordered by stands of aspen with wide views toward the distant town. The design divides the program across three small structures, each one carefully placed at the edge of the aspen grove to create a loosely organized compound within the landscape. The clients requested restrained living spaces to ensure each area would be used daily and to keep energy consumption low. Broad roofs scale to the size of the surrounding landscape, sheltering the compact interiors and providing ample covered outdoor space. These sheltered patios extend the living areas outward, oriented to take in views across the plateau and toward the mountains. Building footprints remain modest as a matter of both philosophy and efficiency, allowing the compound to fit comfortably within the working ranch environment.
