Turnbull Griffin Haesloop — above Cloverdale

The Cloverdale Residence features wood and metal siding with a green roof, blending into a natural landscape.

Cloverdale Residence is a 2,150-square-foot house designed by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop, situated on a vineyard above Cloverdale on a steep south slope overlooking the valley. The project responds to a site marked by mature oaks, rock outcroppings, and an existing pool. The design replaces a 1970s kit log home that previously occupied the prime spot above the pool, with an approach focused on reusing existing site elements and materials. The new house was shaped by a brief for minimal site impact and straightforward living, incorporating sustainable strategies in both construction and energy use. The program places emphasis on connecting indoor spaces with the landscape and views. By integrating a screened-in living area into the body of the house, the design echoes the owners’ memories of childhood porches while allowing the space to serve as an entry for guest bedrooms. This move reduces circulation and conserves footprint. The south-facing roof is fitted with photovoltaic panels and solar hot water panels, supplying much of the house's energy. Concrete floor slabs work with heat pumps to provide radiant heating or cooling, and the original log home’s wood was milled for all new interior and exterior paneling, trim, and decking.
