Turnbull Griffin Haesloop — Kentfield

Kentfield Residence by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop is set on a steep hillside in Kentfield, shaped by the site's contours and oriented to frame views of Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco Bay. The design responds to the sloping terrain with a curved retaining wall that follows the land’s natural lines, securing the house in place while integrating it into its environment. The residence is positioned beneath a living roof, which extends the hillside vegetation and visually grounds the structure within the landscape. A portion of this living roof is recessed to create a sheltered courtyard, providing private outdoor space for a pool. Above the planted roof, three distinct volumes—the living room, kitchen and dining area, and master bedroom—project upward, each covered with angled shed roofs that optimize solar exposure. These roofs support photovoltaic and solar hot water systems, emphasizing energy efficiency. The building employs both passive and active climate control strategies, incorporates battery storage, and uses a cistern to manage rainwater runoff.
