South Bay Residence by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop is situated adjacent to Stanford University open space, with distant views extending to the hills. Designed for clients who are artists and makers, the brief called for flexible, purpose-driven spaces, including his and her studios, a wood workshop, a garden dedicated to succulents, and areas to display artworks and books. The compound approach responds to both the programmatic needs and the site's outlook. The design arranges two gabled pavilions connected by a low bar with a living roof. The main pavilion houses the core living spaces within a high gabled volume, oriented toward the landscape and extending out to a covered porch for outdoor living. The studios are located in a low wing, each with sliding doors opening to gardens and outdoor work areas, with a long bookcase lining the path between spaces. Exterior materials include unfinished cedar cladding, zinc and living roofs, and reclaimed wood flooring. Sun exposure is managed via movable shades, and water is collected in a 10,000-gallon system for the extensive garden.
