Turnbull Griffin Haesloop — Sonoma

The Sonoma Residence by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop is situated on a gently sloping meadow filled with mature oaks, descending toward a spring-fed pond. The brief called for a house supporting indoor and outdoor living during the summer months, with direct connections from the main residence to both the pool and pond, and views framing the surrounding landscape. Conditions on the site informed a scheme that orients the house to integrate with its setting and encourages movement between indoor spaces and the outdoors. A thin floating roof spans the primary outdoor living area, establishing a clear threshold from the arrival court to the landscape beyond. The interior program, including bedrooms, kitchen, and service spaces, is organized beneath a planted roof, visually merging the architecture with the meadow. A separate pool house extends outdoor use, defined by deep shade trellises and including a playroom, guest accommodations, and utility areas. Additional amenities such as a fire pit and dock bring the living spaces to the water’s edge. Sustainability measures include a net-zero approach, achieved through passive cooling, heavy insulation, a green roof, operable glazing, and large overhangs, as well as solar-powered heating systems for the home and pool.
