Turnbull Griffin Haesloop — Marin County, CA
West Marin Residence is a family compound by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop located on a knoll within a large ranch in Marin County, California. The project was shaped by the needs of an extended family gathering place and the site's exposure to strong winds. The buildings are arranged to form a courtyard that provides shelter and creates a protected outdoor area with views toward Mount Tamalpais. The courtyard contains a plunge pool and hot tub, and offers a sunny retreat, shielded from prevailing winds. The main house includes an open living, dining, and kitchen area sized for large groups, with bedrooms and bunkrooms accommodating overnight guests. Sustainability was integral to the project, with strategies including a remote photovoltaic array for net-zero electricity, high levels of insulation, reclaimed wood flooring, zoned radiant heating with passive cooling, and a rainwater system for toilets. The exterior features Western red cedar siding and a corrugated zinc roof, with stainless steel sunshades at the windows to control heat gain. Interior furnishings were designed by Jeannie Fraise of Lotus Bleu, while the SWA Group oversaw site restoration and native planting throughout the landscape.
