Piché Architecture — Boulder, Colorado

Sentinel Rock house by Piché Architecture features a wide flat roof and wood siding on a rocky hillsite.

Sentinel Rock is a restoration and renovation project by Piché Architecture of a midcentury modern house originally designed by Tician Papachristou in Boulder, Colorado. Set in the foothills above the city, the house is situated among prominent rock outcroppings, distinguished by its position elevated above the terrain. The brief called for a careful balance—preserving the original design’s clarity and simplicity while making the residence compatible with contemporary use. The intervention maintains the home’s principal materials, restoring the original palette of concrete, wood, and expansive glass. The house’s extensive glazing frames uninterrupted views over the landscape and reinforces the visual relationship with its surroundings. The design includes selective refinement of interior spaces and detailing, prioritizing the retention of natural material character and patina. New building systems and targeted upgrades improve the home’s energy efficiency, fire resistance, and overall durability. These changes support contemporary standards of comfort and resilience without compromising the formal and material qualities of the original structure.
